Bio
Folk Music isn't usually this greasy. Now based out of Montreal, the buzz about Steve Brockley's BC born crew has been building since beginning a relentless tour schedule in March 2010 in support of their first full length album. These are songs that other songwriters talk about, and musicians that other musicians talk about. Leon Power's grunt-worthy beats combined with Kevin Bertram's percussive double bass swagger make a low-down groove while Steve Brockley's finger picked electric guitar tactics and whiskey-blend vocals deliver some honest songs from the heart and from the guts. Originally from Vernon, BC, after a few years gigging and touring as a side-man on guitar, Brockley eventually made his way to Montreal on New Years Day 2008 to start anew as a songwriter. Fitting right into the local music scene, he soon found himself on tour as guitarist for the infamous United Steel Workers of Montreal, also having the opportunity to play some opening slots along the way. His solo act quickly expanded to a trio with Leon Power (drums) and Kevin Bertram (bass), and during a break in touring, they recorded their self-titled debut album, a nine song, live-off-the-floor, analogue jewel. Finding themselves with less and less time for bowling, the Steve Brockley trio hit the dusty trail with Miss Emily Brown in spring 2010, playing 46 dates in 59 days between St. John's Newfoundland and Victoria BC. While Brockley's knowledge and repetoire of traditional folk music is apparent, he's able to take the style in new directions without making the audience feel up-rooted. Listening to Brockley's writing and guitar style, it's no suprise he lists his major guitar influence as Mississippi John Hurt, and his favourite songs from folks like Townes Van Zandt, Hank Williams, Bob Dylan, and Woody Guthrie. Add to that Leon Power's love for Levon Helm and Kevin Bertram's obsession with the Wood Brothers and James Brown, put them in a wood-panelled station wagon and you have the truly infectious Steve Brockley experience.
