Bio
The music of singer-songwriter Patrick Brealey is steeped in a mix of roots and country with doses of cabaret and blues thrown in for good measure. The result is an intelligent blend of lyrically driven tunes for the head and heart that have listeners cracking a smile at one moment and wiping a tear the next. City Blood, Country Heart, the debut album from Patrick Brealey & the Knives was released in May 2007. This full-length travels a rolling landscape between soul-touching ballads and theatrical rollicks in which listeners find themselves in a world where influences like Willie Nelson, Elvis Costello and Neko Case roam. The songs are home to a lyrical depth compared to the likes of Lyle Lovett, Tom Waits and Leonard Cohen while Brealey’s delivery combines tongue-in-cheek humour with heartfelt honesty, creating a perfect soundtrack for weekend mornings, sunsets at the cabin or a long drive along a dirt road. Cutting his performance teeth on international tours with indie-popsters The Salteens, Brealey began performing his own material in 2005, building a dedicated Vancouver following and expanding his horizons by playing solo shows in Toronto in the summer of 2007. In February 2008, Patrick moved to Toronto where he is developing a new set of fans throughout the east while writing and recording his second full-length album. Whether performing solo or with a full band, Brealey’s engaging stage presence keeps audiences captivated and no one should be surprised if they become part of the show – perhaps by providing a whistle solo or finding themselves in a mid-show conversation about anything from baseball statistics to laser eye surgery. Live performances of the past year have seen Patrick share the stage with Luke Doucet, Justin Rutledge, Craig Cardiff, Leeroy Stagger, and Mother Mother. Patrick is busy completing songs for the forthcoming full-length album, due for release in early 2009.
